Thank you for all the newspaper! We have more than enough to make 23 dinosaurs. Thanks to our 7th and 8th grade buddies the crumpled newspaper is starting to look like dinosaurs. Hopefully by next week they will be ready to display in the hallway. Students continue to read dinosaurs books and work on their charts. Tomorrow is India Culture Day! Our class will learn about India throughout the day. We will make chicken curry, read, write facts, color a map, and make a flag with tissue paper. The whole class will work on a unique art project of the Taj Mahal.
This week 1st and 2nd grade will lead Mass. Please join us Friday at 12:00. We practiced the reading parts in class today. Students need to continue practicing at home. We are working on loud, clear voices and good eye contact. Tomorrow and Thursday we will practice in church.

Happy November! We have some great units planned this month.
Today students started reading about dinosaurs. There are 19 AR dinosaur books in the classroom this week from the public library ranging from 1st grade to 5th grade reading levels. The students will read, gather information, complete a chart, and make a paper dinosaur for their project. *Please send newspaper to school if you have any. We need enough for 23 dinosaurs. That's a lot of newspaper!
Our class will also start the water unit this week. It includes: making a water molecule, a water taste test, reading Saving Salila's Turtle, and mini investigations. The final STEM project will be working in small groups to design a water filter. *Please save empty 2 liter soda bottles and water bottles. We need 8 of the 2 liter bottles and 12 water bottles. Thank you!
In Religion, our class is learning about Baptism. It is the first Sacrament received in the Catholic Church. The class is very excited to participate in the Baptism of Skyler and Hadley this month.

Welcome to our last week of October! Today students completed a following directions art lesson - A Taste of Fall inspired by artist Paul Cezanne. This Wednesday, we will do another following directions lesson for science - The Skeleton. These lessons help students to improve listening and focusing attention skills, part of our SecondSteps program.
Students are doing a great job on Freckles Math in class and at home! I receive a daily email from the company recognizing students who have passed a math level. They earn a nickel for the Christmas shopping event each time a math level is passed. Keep up the awesome effort!
Our focus for workshop this week is writing. We are finishing the September paragraphs for portfolios. We continue to work on the Saint Reports that we started with 7th/8th grade buddies. We will also begin the October writing in a Newsletter format. No spelling test this week. Words for next week will come from student's writing.
*The Halloween party is this Thursday from 1:30 to 2:45. We still need a few parents to help with centers from 1:30 to 2:00. Please let me know if you would like to join us.
Our schedule: Game/Craft Centers 1:30 -2:00, The Haunted Hut 2:00 - 2:30, Treats 2:30 - 2:45

Happy Monday! Students are enjoying our new Freckle's Math program. They are using it in class and may do math practice at home. Parents, please stop by after school this week on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday to find out how you can help your child get started on this awesome program at home. They are doing math work linked to standards and having fun doing it. This is the kind of math homework your children will ask to do!
*Important reminders for parents - Please do not help your child on the pretest for each math domain. It is OK if students choose a wrong answer and then try again. The computer adapts the level according to how they answer questions. Students will then be placed at a practice level. We are focusing on math for now and will add ELA practice later. Assignments in the backpack are to be done at school. Thank you for your support.
On Wednesday, we will be doing Monster Me Learning Glyphs in class. Students will discover how they learn best through this activity. We are also working on our first monthly writing activity for portfolios. Students chose 2 or 3 of their favorite learning activities to write about from September.

Homework for the week: Reading, Math side B, and Spelling rainbow words.
*Rainbow words should be worked on each night. On Monday, students choose 1 color and write all their words. On Tuesday, students choose a second color and go over each word. On Wednesday, students choose their last color and go over each word again. The goal is to practice words each night and learn how to spell them.
Have a wonderful week!

For religion we are working with 7/8th grade buddies to write a saint report. We are also praying 1 decade of the Rosary each day of October for peace in the world.
Halloween Party - Students will change into costumes after recess and the party will be in the classroom from 1:30 to 2:00. At 2:00 we will go to the Haunted Hut. Students will come back to class at 2:30 for a snack. Thank you to Abby Pohlschneider, Rachel Smith, and Heather George for signing up to help with the Halloween celebration. *Parents, you may have noticed not as many papers are going home in the Friday folder each week. We are keeping all tests and many of the written activities for portfolios.
Scholastic Book orders - Parents, please be sure to include the class code TRF7N if you order online. If you just put in the teacher's name the order does not link to my account. Sorry for any inconvenience.

We are finishing the science unit on The Sun, the Moon, and Stars. Last week we did an activity called the Great Crater Investigation. Ask your children what they learned. Tomorrow will be the jeopardy game to find out what students remember from the science unit. Good luck first and second grade! Friday, Oct. 4th is the feast day of Saint Francis of Assisi. This week we will start our saint unit with a prayer service and a reminder that God calls each of us to be a saint.
