We have some great activities this week! In religion, students continue to learn about the Sacrament of Reconciliation as the second graders prepare for their special day. We are finishing session 6 of Blessed by Dynamic Catholic this week. We will also complete the clean heart/heart of sin lesson and activity on Wednesday. I hope all parents received an invitation last week to the First Reconciliation celebration on Friday, 2-21. Please meet in the classroom at 9:00 and we will walk over to the church together. We have a big group this year so I am asking students to bring a children's Bible to read in church while waiting.
Tomorrow is Art Smarts. Our class really enjoys the awesome art lessons with Mrs. George! Thank you for sharing your time and talent with our school.
For STEMscopes we are starting our Mission Log this week. The final project will include making a 3-D map for an Alaskan cruise line. So far students have only made 2-D maps in class. We are learning about landforms and bodies of water.
This Friday, 2-14 is the St. Valentine's Day Party at 2:00-2:45. Please let me know if you would like to help out with this event.
STEM Valentine boxes may be brought to school on Friday only. I look forward to seeing the creative designs. *Remember, it must fit on one side of your desk and hold all your valentine treats.
Homework for the week: Read, Math, and Spelling
This week spelling is a phonics rule we have been working on in class - change y to i and add your ending. Each night students should only complete one column. Please use the homework page to do a practice spelling test at home Thursday evening. I will collect spelling homework on Friday.
Have a wonderful week!

Students enjoyed a wonderful Catholic Schools' Week! Thank you Grandparents for your participation in Mass, making cards, and watching the parade. All of you are a blessing to our school. The Reptile Man was excellent! Many students had the opportunity to hold and touch some interesting creatures. We have some very brave girls in our class. Beth let a lizard crawl on her. Claire held a snake around her shoulders. Carly was kissed by a lizard.
First and second graders did a great job designing and building a Great Wall using only index cards. The wall needed to be 5 inches tall and 10 inches long. One team managed to get 345 pennies to stay on their wall! Awesome job!
This Friday, our class will have the chance to buy candy grams at 10:15. They cost 25 cents each. Students must have their money with them to purchase the candy grams.
*Saint Valentine's Day STEM Challenge - Students may have help at home designing and making a creative Valentine card holder. The container needs to be big enough to hold all their cards and treats but cannot be larger than the top of their desk. Students are very excited about this project! Enjoy working on this STEM activity together.

Happy Catholic Schools Week! Today we started learning about China. Be sure to ask your child to share some facts they remember. On Wednesday afternoon, students will work in teams to complete a new STEM challenge. Each team will build a Great Wall of China with index cards only. How many pennies will your wall hold? If you have pennies to share, please send them in and we will put them to good use!
Wednesday is also the Grandparent's Mass at 8:15 AM. Students are welcome to sit with Grandparents at Mass. Please join us in the classroom after Mass to help your grandchild make a beautiful Valentine's card for a child in the hospital.
Thursday should be an exciting day with a visit from the reptile man at 9:00 and a tangram adventure with Grandfather Tang's Story at 10:00.
No homework this week in appreciation of all my hardworking students!
No school Friday!
Have a great week!

Thank you for the book orders that have already come in. We are extending the due date because a new flyer was sent home last Friday. If you would like to order Scholastic books you may send orders to class with a check or order online. Be sure to use our classroom code TRF7N for online orders.
Lots of great lessons and activities this short 4 day week!
Our class will lead Mass this Friday the 24th at 12:00. If your child has a reading part please practice at home. Looking for good eye contact and loud voice. I hope you can join us for Mass.
This week's focus is reading comprehension and AR. All students should be reading each night with a family member. Reading out loud greatly improves fluency and comprehension.
The math focus for second grade is addition with regrouping. This is a challenging skill for students. In class we are using dimes and pennies. (Example: if students are adding 56 + 28 they would put all the pennies together first. Then they would trade 10 pennies for a dime from the bank/money bag. 8 + 6 would become 1 dime and 4 pennies.) Using the math manipulatives will help students better understand regrouping. I am sending home a bag of plastic dimes and pennies if a student would like, to help with math homework.
We are starting a Culture Day study of China and finishing our Martin Luther King Jr. lessons for social studies. In science/STEMscopes we are learning about landforms, charts, and map symbols.
The Birthday celebration for January is this Friday at 2:20.
Homework: Read each night and finish math lessons side B.
No spelling homework this week. Friday's test will include 10 review words and 2 sentences.
Have a wonderful week!

Happy Birthday Carly, Clay, and Lane! We will celebrate January Birthdays this Friday at 2:20.
Today in reading the literature group started a new chapter book: Mrs. Piggle Wiggle. Each chapter has a creative solution to a common problem. Be sure to have your child share what happens in this funny story each week. The second grade group did readers theater today for the play: Bremen Town Musicians.
We will start math speed tests this week. Students will be timed and have 3 minutes to finish 25 addition problems. Spending 5 minutes each night practicing flash cards is very helpful.
In Religion we are doing session 2 of the Reconciliation unit. Students are learning about making Good Choices and the Ten Commandments. They are also finishing their Sacrament mobile. Beautiful work 1st and 2nd grade. I can't wait to put them all up!
Homework: Math side B, read each night, and write spelling words using best handwriting.
Have a wonderful week.

This Wednesday, some of the second graders will lead us in morning prayer. In Religion, we will be learning about the Sacrament of Reconciliation as the 2nd graders prepare for their First Reconciliation on February 21st. Today we started the 1st session of "Blessed" by Dynamic Catholic. The students really like the video clips and lessons. We will continue to pray one decade of the Rosary on Tuesdays and Thursdays for peace in our world.
In science, students are finishing the water filter unit with an art project this week. They are drawing Salila's turtle using pastels and water color. We will also start a new unit from STEMscopes.
In social studies, students will complete the first 2 lessons from SecondSteps - Ways to Stay Safe.

Homework: Math side B, write spelling words with a new color each day - due Thursday, and read daily.
